More payment options come to SCDMV offices
December 16, 2024
New, more convenient payment options have been rolled out to customers at all branch offices of the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles.
The SCDMV has installed new credit card readers at all of its 66 branch offices in the state, with the final installations completed in November.
The new credit card readers replace the agency’s old readers which only allowed credit card “swipe” transactions. The new models allow customers to pay for their transactions using the more secure chip-scanning technology that provides a higher barrier to fraud. Customers may also use the tap-to-pay feature offered on many credit and debit cards, which is an even more secure means of payment.
Additionally, customers will have the convenience of using Apple Pay to complete their DMV transactions. Apple Pay is an easy-to-use payment option available to users of iPhone, iPad tablets and Apple Watches in lieu of a physical credit card.
Customers will continue to have multiple options for paying for transactions at SCDMV offices including credit or debit cards, Apple Pay, personal checks, money orders or cash.
Using a credit card, debit card or Apple Pay for payment at a DMV will continue to add a transaction fee from the credit card service provider to a customer’s total bill.
Along with the introduction of the new credit card readers that expand payment options, the agency is discontinuing the use of ATMs in its branch offices.
Many SCDMV transactions never require a visit to a branch office at all. Customers can go to SCDMVonline.com and click on Online Services to see their options.
