While you're an active-duty military personnel, your vehicle must be properly registered if it is driven in South Carolina. There are military-specific license plates you may be interested in if you honorably serve or have honorably serviced this country.

But, there are slightly different rules to keeping your driver's license updated if you're an active military member.

Vehicle Requirements During Active Duty

If you own a vehicle and you're on active-duty military orders in South Carolina, you must have the Statement of Vehicle Operation in South Carolina (SCDMV Form TI-006) with your valid identification and the following:

  • Military identification card
  • Orders indicating duties in SC
  • Leave and Earnings Statement (LES) showing assignment in SC

Infrastructure Maintenance Fees

South Carolina residents who are members of the Armed Services are not exempt from infrastructure maintenance fees (IMF) (formerly vehicle sales tax) when buying vehicles.
