There are now more online options at the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV). Customers who lose their registration decals for the lower right-hand corner of their license plates can now purchase replacements online. There’s also no need to visit an SCDMV branch to return your license plate after you sell your vehicle. You can do it from the comfort of home.
“The SCDMV understands your time is valuable,” said SCDMV Executive Director Kevin Shwedo. “We are working every day to implement time saving tools that allow you to get your transactions done safely and efficiently, all while eliminating trips to the SCDMV whenever possible."
Customers who replace their registration decals at SCDMVOnline.com will securely login to the agency’s website and pay $6 plus a $1.10 administrative fee. The decals will be mailed to customers.
Customers can also return license plates virtually at SCDMVOnline.com. Customers do not need to physically turn in their old license plates to the SCDMV. You’re encouraged to recycle the license plate once you complete the online turn in. It is no longer valid and cannot be used on any vehicle.
Customers will select a reason for turning in the license plate, and a confirmation receipt will be mailed to the address of the vehicle’s registered owner.
These new transactions allow customers to save a trip to the SCDMV and allow the agency to continue properly social distancing.
The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles’ (SCDMV) only official website is SCDMVOnline.com. There are other websites that appear to be affiliated with the SCDMV but have no relationship with the state and using them may wind up costing you more.
Unofficial third-party websites may use a combination of the SCDMV’s initials, ‘DMV,’ or may use .org as the domain name.
Read the fine print and look for phrases like “for-profit” or “privately owned” to detect websites that are not affiliated with the SCDMV.
The SCDMV logo with the Palmetto Tree and Crescent Moon is on the upper left-hand corner of the website. The agency’s seal is in the lower left-hand corner of the website.
Customers using unofficial third-party websites may be charged additional fees for transactions. Using those sites could put your financial and personal information at risk, and it doesn’t guarantee the transaction will be completed or processed properly.
The SCDMV is not held responsible for any actions and content on these unofficial sites. Only use SCDMVOnline.com for SCDMV business.
