Charleston-Wappoo Road branch closing

May 01, 2018

The SCDMV office, commonly referred to as “Ashley Oaks,” at 1119-K Wappoo Road in Charleston will permanently close on Friday, June 22, 2018 at 5:00 p.m.

“This office closure is an example of South Carolina’s and, more specifically, the Charleston-area’s growing population,” said Executive Director Kevin Shwedo. “Due to limited parking available for other shopping center tenants while the branch office was open, the landlord did not renew the agency’s lease to continue serving customers out of the Ashley Oaks location.”

The other area branches on Leeds Avenue, Lockwood Boulevard, and in Mount Pleasant will continue serving customers and take on the employees being displaced due to the Ashley Oaks closure. The branch on Leeds Avenue will grow with at least five additional counter stations thanks to the agency’s CARES vehicle, which will be stationed in the office’s parking lot.

The CARES, or Community Action Response and Emergency Services, vehicle can complete most of the same transactions as a brick-and-mortar branch. This mobile unit is just as secure as the agency’s offices, and customers should experience no disruption in normal service.

“In addition to the CARES vehicle, the agency is working to install additional work stations at the other offices in the area,” said Deputy Director of Field Services Courtney White. “While customers who used the Ashley Oaks office may have to drive a bit farther after its closure, we are confident they will continue getting top notch customer service at the other Charleston-area locations.”

The agency is actively searching for an office comparable to the Ashley Oaks location to reopen for customers in the future.
