Requirement for a Manufacturer Plate

To qualify for a Manufacturer license plate, all of the following must be true:

  • The license plates must be used exclusively on motor vehicles, including motorcycles, owned or in the possession of a manufacturer.
  • A motor vehicle manufacturer is defined as a person in the business of manufacturing or assembling new and unused vehicles in this state.
  • New applicants must provide proof of bona fide manufacturer status. Acceptable documentation may include:
    • Articles of Incorporation or business registration
    • a manufacturer’s license or certification
    • facility documentation verifying a manufacturing location in South Carolina
    • federal manufacturer credentials (such as a World Manufacturer Identifier).
  • Vehicles with manufacturer plates may be operated by persons authorized by the manufacturer on vehicles of that manufacturer’s brand on state streets and highways for testing, distribution, evaluation and promotion of vehicles.

The S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles may issue no more than 500 manufacturer license plates to a motor vehicle manufacturer.
