Florence branch closes for fall, temporary office opens nearby

October 18, 2017

The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles’ (SCDMV) branch on East Palmetto Street in Florence will close for the fall once business ends on Friday, October 20, 2017. A temporary location will open a few miles away, but the Florence branch will not re-open until extensive renovations are complete.

“This is the Florence office’s first full renovation since it opened in 1972,” said SCDMV Executive Director Kevin Shwedo. “Due to population growth in the Pee Dee, adding eight counters to this branch, while making it fully ADA compliant, was particularly important to providing quality service to all of our customers.”

The SCDMV will set up a temporary location in the Florence area during the office closure. You will be able to complete the same transactions at 407 Quinby Plaza in Florence beginning Monday, October 23, 2017.

However, motorcycle tests will be given at the East Palmetto Street location. You will begin the transaction at Quinby Plaza, but travel to the East Palmetto Street building for the actual road test.

“When considering offices to renovate, the SCDMV evaluates the average wait time for customers, the age of the facility, and the size of the office,” said SCDMV Director of Administration Trish Blake. “We’re confident this Florence renovation will result in a better customer experience for all South Carolinians who frequent this location.”

The contractor completing the work on the Florence branch has four months to finish the project. There’s no firm date on the office’s reopening at this time, but the SCDMV will continue to keep the public updated.

You can also complete many transactions online.  The agency’s new mobile-first website gives you access to the SCDMV 24/7.
