Updated: May 18, 2020 to reflect skills testing to resume at limited branches
Beginning Monday, April 6, 2020, the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) will resume administering motorcycle skills testing at branch offices where the service was previously offered. Motorcycle skills test will by appointment only. Non-commercial vehicle road tests have been changed to modified skills tests and are available at select branches by appointment only. Also beginning Monday, April 6, 2020, the SCDMV will resume administering a limited number of road tests for commercial motor vehicle drivers looking to obtain a commercial driver’s license (CDL). The SCDMV will offer CDL road tests at specific locations by appointment only using volunteer examiners. The SCDMV will offer CDL road test appointments as long as examiners are able to support. Customers in urgent need of a CDL road test should check led a CDL appointment using the link above.
”We understand the importance of commercial trucking to our state and our nation, and we are doing what we can to keep truckers on the road to deliver vital supplies,” said SCDMV Executive Director Kevin Shwedo. “Our ability to license commercial motor vehicle drivers impacts everything we do, from getting gasoline delivered to putting products on shelves at grocery stores.”
The new appointment system takes effect April 6, 2020, and all SCDMV customers who want to conduct transactions in person must schedule an appointment before they arrive. Customers will be able to schedule appointments up to two weeks in advance. An SCDMV employee will attempt to contact customers before their scheduled appointment times to confirm documents required for the appointment and to see if the customer’s transaction can be accomplished online. ”We are implementing an appointment reservation system that will benefit our customers greatly by guaranteeing them a time with one of our customer service representatives,” said SCDMV Director of Branch Services Courtney Saxon. “This will eliminate lines and waiting in our branch offices, which will assist employees and customers in adhering to social distancing recommendations.”
The SCDMV also wants to remind customers that the official website for this agency is SCDMVOnline.com. Any other websites may be fraudulent or require customers pay additional fees for agency-related services.

Adjustment in Days of Operations
Beginning April 6, 2020, the SCDMV will adjust days of operations at all branch office locations. In order to better serve customers, the SCDMV will consolidate employees at offices that offer the greatest number of SCDMV services. The SCDMV will reduce the number of offices that are open but will maintain operations in at least one office in each county. Offices providing the most services and with the highest transaction volumes will be open three days per week on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Other offices will be open two days per week on Monday and Friday, and some offices will be open only on Wednesday each week.
