SCDMV Skills Tests Updates 2021
August 24, 2021
The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) is changing how it offers regular driver's license (Class D) road tests in light of rising numbers of coronavirus cases across the state.
Beginning Wednesday, August 25, 2021, masks are required for both applicants and examiners during all road and skills tests. This mask requirement is for non-commercial and commercial skills tests where an applicant and an examiner are co-located in a vehicle.
Beginning Monday, August 30, 2021, skills tests for regular (Class D) license applicants will be available by appointment only. The SCDMV will not accept walk-ins for regular (Class D) skills tests. Traditionally, walk-ins have been accepted during the morning hours at SCDMV branch offices, however beginning Monday, only customers with an appointment will be able to take a regular (Class D) license skills test.
Customers can book a skills test online by visiting SCDMVOnline.com.
Beginning Tuesday, September 7, 2021 (the day after Labor Day), the SCDMV will return to administering a modified skills tests for applicants who want a regular (Class D) license. These modified tests will require an appointment and will only be offered at certain SCDMV branches. A list of locations that will offer modified Class D skills tests is below.
Modified skills tests consist of the same skills that a traditional road test would entail. However, the license applicant is in the car alone while the SCDMV examiner scores and monitors the applicant's skills from outside the vehicle. Applicants should study for the modified skills test as if they were taking the regular, on-road test.
All SCDMV branch office lobbies will remain open for customer transactions and walk-ins are accepted for the majority of transactions. Customers should anticipate longer wait times when visiting offices. To help minimize wait times, customers are encouraged to visit alternate locations that are close to the branch they're familiar with. A completed list of offices can be found at SCDMVonline.com.
The SCDMV encourages, but does not require, customers to wear a mask when visiting any office. Customers may also utilize SCDMVonline.com to complete some of the most common transactions from the comfort of their home.
